By Sabita Singh. I turned 50 this year. Ugh! I said it! However, celebrating my 50th in glorious Greece, with my husband and close friends, made it a much easier pill to swallow.
If Greece is on your bucket list, I recommend moving it up to the top for the following three reasons:
- The Ancient History
Greece is home to some of the most historic sites in the world. The top site to see is the Acropolis. It is over 2,000 years old and is located on a high hill in Athens with 360-degree views of the city. Even if you are only in Athens for a short period, you should take the time to visit the Acropolis.
The volcanic island of Santorini is also a must see on a trip to Greece. The volcano erupted in 16th century BC, leaving a rugged and scenic island with an underwater crater that is unlike anywhere on the planet. The sunsets in Santorini are stunning too!
- The Beautiful Beaches
I have travelled all over the world, but the beaches on the island of Lefkada are absolutely gorgeous. The water is a vibrant shade of indigo blue that I have never seen before. Some of the beaches are difficult to get to by foot, but they are worth the trek. The hikes are also a great way to work off the many wonderful meals you will have in Greece!
- The Fabulous Food
If you love Greek food as much as I do, you will not be disappointed when you taste the local cuisine. There are countless restaurants featuring savoury souvlaki, gyros on a pita (loaded with French fries) and huge Greek salads. The big slabs of feta cheese on every Greek salad was the best! And, if you are a seafood lover, Greece is the place for you! We had grilled octopus and fried calamari as fresh and delicious appetizers for most of our meals!
This amazing trip in September also marked the one year anniversary of starting my own business. I had a successful career of working in digital marketing and communications for over 25 years, but lost my job suddenly in 2018.
I have heard people say it is never too late to follow your dreams. I had always wanted to be an entrepreneur, so I took the plunge and started my own business at 49. I am now a LinkedIn coach who helps my clients build a powerful digital presence. I love working with them one on one, controlling my own destiny and running a digital business where I can work anywhere around the world like in beautiful Greece.
As I turn 50 this year, I feel that a fabulous new chapter of my life has just begun. I never thought I would say this, but cheers to getting older – and to new adventures!
